For better and (in some ways) worse, AI is revolutionizing production in ways we’re only beginning to wrap our heads around. On one hand, it can bring our imaginations to life, and expand our visual horizons even beyond our wildest dreams. It democratizes access to a premium level of production value previously only available to a handful of Hollywood’s most powerful directors. That visual potential is incredibly exciting, and we’ve only just seen the tip of the iceberg.

On the other hand, is it diluting our perception of what’s real? Making us question the authenticity of everything, even the authentic? And with the lines of reality and fantasy blurring further with every new version of Veo or Sora or Midjourney, will the trust between audience and filmmaker be compromised, particularly in the realm of documentary?

I’ve been thinking a lot about these questions, and at the same time learning the ropes of AI video and image generation both to understand it better and to be able to speak the language well enough to utilize it, creatively and responsibly, in my future work. I’m proud to have earned a certificate in AI Documentary from Curious Refuge, the best AI filmmaking tutors in the business.

Here’s a clip I recently created inspired by Homer’s Odyssey. Every element of audio and video is AI generated. And by the time you see this it will be obsolete – the goalposts in AI are moving so fast it’s amazing to think what will be possible in just a few short weeks or months.
